Sopron or Little Prague, the former Ödenburg of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, is a charming small town that has preserved virtually all the traces of its Roman, medieval and Baroque past. It is to a single man, Endre Gatsk, that it owes this restoration work, undertaken after the Second World War. Although in 1921 the town refused to become part of Austria - the border is only 6km away - many Austrians understandably come here to do their shopping, wander round the old town and try the red wine.
