The church built between 1872 and 1873 had to wait 80 years for its bell tower because Josef II, Emperor of Austria, had forbidden the building of bell towers on Lutheran churches. The huge church can hold a congregation of 4 000, on three levels. It has the largest organ in Hungary. Of the four bells, the biggest bears the names of the Lutherans who died in the First World War, and another has a portrait of Luther.
