The synagogue in Szeged is considered the most beautiful in Hungary, and possibly even Europe. It was built between 1900 and 1903 in the Art Nouveau style with Moorish elements. An immense dome supported by 24 columns and decorated with white roses and blue stars, is surmounted by a Star of David. The stained-glass windows are by Miksa Róth, a celebrated glassmaker, who decorated Budapest's Academy of Music. The names of 1 874 Jews from Szeged who died in the Second World War are engraved on white marble plaques in the entrance hall.
