Lake Balaton stretches out for over 77km over a surface of 598km². Its two banks are very different. The north bank is the most interesting, with a number of lakeside resorts and vineyards which cling to the volcanic slopes and produce very pleasant white wines. The south bank has a number of holiday villages which are often packed. On either bank, the lake's landscapes, nature reserves, 130 beaches and folklore make it focal point of Hungarian tourism.
