A city that encompasses the legendary Orient of old and the modernity of the present day, the political capital of India is a palette of contrasts. Stretching out along the right bank of the Yamuna, a tributary of the Ganges, Delhi is divided between Old Delhi, the city founded in the 17C, and New Delhi, the capital of the Indian empire established by the British. On one side, an inextricable maze of narrow streets full of carts pulled by oxen, with Indo-Muslim monuments such as the Red Fort and the Jama Masjid mosque; and on the other, wide and spacious avenues built in perfectly straight lines which are home to government buildings and embassies.
