Guwahati has grown to incorporate Dispur, the capital of Assam. Paradoxically, this dynamic and rapidly expanding city is also renowned for its superb natural surroundings: the humid plain of the Brahmaputra river, which in places reaches 6-8km in width, and includes islands and beaches, attracts a wide variety of birdlife, which is nowadays protected.
