Although your first impression of Ajmer is likely to be a noisy one, it’s worth persevering in this city of half a million inhabitants in order to spend time in the narrow streets of its old quarters. In Ajmer, colourful turbans give way to Islamic caps, and the bell towers of temples to the call of the muezzin: throughout the year, worshippers – often from far away – congregate at the dargah (tomb) of the Sufi saint Khwaja Main ud-Din Chisti, the most venerated Muslim sanctuary in India. Activity here is even more frenetic during the Urs festival, which commemorates the death of the saint in 1236.
