The Shekhawati region is dotted with numerous haveli – attractive mansions built by wealthy merchants from the area arranged around a series of inner courtyards (chowk). In Nawalgarh, the Poddar haveli, which now houses a small museum dedicated to local traditions, is richly decorated with wall paintings evoking Hindu gods, as well as major modern inventions introduced to India by the Europeans, such as the train, bicycle and motor car.
