The capital of the Mughal empire is now no more than a ghost town. Although its houses have disappeared, its magnificent red sandstone Mughal- and Rajput-style palaces remain: the Panch Mahal, with its 176 columns; the Palace of Jodha Bai, adorned with jharokha (balconies); and the Palace of the Turkish Sultana, flanked by a veranda. In addition to the two Diwan (audience halls), note the house of Birbal, a small palace decorated with floral motifs.
