The Cholas established a brilliant civilisation in Southern India from the 9C-13C, choosing Thanjavur, on the east coast, as their capital. In addition to the temple of Brihadishvara, the old town has preserved a complex of palaces from the Vijayanagara period (16C-17C). Tanjore also boasts a tradition of saris made from silk and woven with gold.
