Uluwatu is renowned not only for its fabulous temple but also for its waves, which attract the best surfers from around the world (only the most experienced should attempt to take on these exhilarating but dangerous breakers). From the road (2km from the temple), steps go down to Suluban Beach, where you can sip a cold drink in a warung while watching the surfers in action, flying in the face of the elements. Ask for directions to other spots, such as Padang Padang, Bingin and Nyangnyang, which are difficult to find.
