Solo (Surakarta) : Michelin's recommendations
The royal city of Solo is located just 60km or so from Yogyakarta, its eternal rival, and, as such, is often left off the tourist trail. But the city is well worth a visit: first and foremost for its enchanting setting, with three volcanoes that seem to watch over the city from afar, but also for its relaxed atmosphere and student population. Javanese culture and identity are more in evidence here than elsewhere (Solo is THE city of batik) and its palaces, but also its numerous markets, make it a captivating place to spend a few days.
