With its 100 000 inhabitants, Sumenep, the former capital of the Cakraningrat kingdom, has remained the principal city of Madura Island. Come here to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and sights, which include an 18C kraton, with its own little museum, a mosque built by the Chinese, and, most impressive of all, lying above the city, the royal cemetery of Asta Tinggi, where the princes of Madura rest in peace and the Madurese like to stroll in respectful silence. A mere 30km from Sumenep is the very beautiful and quiet white-sand beach of Lombang, which is not to be missed.
