The Tirta Ayu water palace is the major draw in this village nestling in the middle of paddy fields and whose name means "water of the Ganges" - the river sacred to Hindus. The spring's waters irrigate not just the palace but also the surrounding paddy fields, which are a lovely place for a walk. Like Ujung Palace, Tirta Ayu was built by the last king of Karangasem, and destroyed by the same volcanic eruption (1963). Since restored, the palace has extensive gardens dotted with pools and stone statues that are lovely to wander through or you can even go for a swim!
