Old Chinese houses (red tile roofs, gables) and elegant temples tell you that you are in Chinatown, although the signs are discreet: repression of the Chinese up to the end of the 20C did little to help the neighbourhood flourish. Visitors come here for the ambience, to inhale the distinctive smell of the soups and to see Jakarta's oldest Buddhist temple, Dharma Bahkti (or Jinde Yuan)… but also to browse the electronic goods at the huge market on Gajah Mada Jalan, which has made Glodok a shopping destination.
