Standing in the middle of Merdeka, Monas, literally "National Monument", is a 137m obelisk topped by a flame made of 35kg of fine gold. Indonesians associate it with linga and yoni, Hindu symbols of fertility, but also the virility of Soekarno, the first Indonesian president! From the top (a lift takes you up), the panorama of the city is exceptional. At the foot of the edifice, the Liberation Museum houses a series of dioramas relating the events of the war of independence.
