One of the country’s finest volcanic landscapes; at the centre of the 13km-wide caldeira (circle created by the collapse of an ancient volcano), in which lies a lake, rises the smoking cone of younger volcano Mount Batur. The routes climbing to the crater witness changes in vegetation, from rice paddies to thick forest. On the caldeira’s edge, several villages have overhanging views, while the shores of the lake offer a different perspective. Climbing the mountain reveals yet more beauties.
