A breathtaking sight! At the centre of this giant rock circle rises the sombre cone of Mount Batur (1 717m), from where a wisp of smoke almost constantly emanates. On its desolate slopes may be discerned, in a subtle cameo of brown hues, the various phases of lava flow; vegetation has already begun to colonise them. To the east, the slopes of Abang (2 153m) drop down into the lake’s blue water. Away on the horizon to the east, unless obscured by cloud, rises the majestic silhouette of Agung.
