Fans of shadow theatre, the national art, can step backstage here to admire the finely crafted puppets made of leather (wayang kulit) or wood (flat wood wayang kelitik), or rod puppets wayang golek) that star in these dreamlike shows. While the majority of the characters and scenarios are based on the Hindu epics of the Mahabharata and Ramayana, it is interesting to see that tradition has at times been deftly adapted to its era – thus Adam and Eve make an appearance – or to convey a political message (separatist puppets).
