Penestanan
: Michelin's recommendations
In the 1960s Penestanan became something of an artists' village under the influence of Arie Smit, a Dutch painter, who distributed canvas and painting materials to children without giving them any further instructions. The villagers began to create spontaneously, using their imagination and instinct. The naive and colourful output, inspired by daily life and popular beliefs, is a step away from the motifs used in traditional Balinese painting. As well as for its galleries, Penestanan is known for its production of pearls and pearl items.
