: Michelin's recommendations
Candi Plaosan is a complex of temples 2km from Prambanan, and combines Hindu and Buddhist decorative elements. The sanctuary is thought to celebrate the union of a Buddhist princess, Sailendra, and a Hindu king, Sanjaya, the two dynasties that shared Java at the time (9C). To the north stands a pair of twin temples both containing three cells, in each of which two impressive bodhisattva flank pedestals formerly occupied by bronze Buddhas. Outside are delicate low reliefs of dancers, and mighty guardians (raksasa) warding off the evil spirits.
