On a hill sculpted into terraces, this is not only a valuable example of civil architecture of the 8C-9C but also affords a magnificent view of the Prambanan Plain and Merapi Volcano, best enjoyed at sunset. The nature of the site is uncertain: a palatial city (perhaps the former capital of Sanjaya) or monastery… Regardless of its original function, a monumental entrance with multiple porticos, a pendopo (pavilion), crematorium and pools dug out of the rock can be clearly distinguished.
