This busy fishing port and former Anglo-Norman enclave was protected from the Irish in the Middle Ages by fortified buildings, some of which are still standing. Jordan's Castle, a medieval tower house set in the heart of the town overlooking the harbour, houses a collection of antiquities. The entrance is protected by machicolations.
