The house is supposedly built on the site of St Patrick's first church in Armagh. It was designed in 1812 by Francis Johnston for Leonard Dobbin, Member of Parliament for Armagh from 1833 to 1838. The houses in nearby Dobbin Street (1811) are also attributed to Francis Johnston.
