Athenry : Michelin's recommendations
Athenry's main historical legacy can be found in its Norman and medieval monuments. A sleepy farming town straddling the River Clarinbridge, Athenry (the king's ford), was once a Norman stronghold. The main buildings can still be found inside the medieval town walls (1211), the best-preserved part of these being the North Gate. The castle, from around 1239, comprises a central keep built over a vaulted crypt.
