The northern gate and city walls
The northern gate and city walls : Michelin's recommendations
Carrickfergus was surrounded by defensive walls and moats from 1607-1610 by the governor Arthur Chichester. The great arch on the northern gate dates mainly back to the 17C, but its structure has been altered and repaired several times. The pedestrian arch and crenels are a 19C addition. A large part of the walls remain in the east, in Shaftesbury Park.
