Bolton Library occupies a small 1836 building found on the lawns around the cathedral. The oldest book among the 12,000 volumes on the library's shelves is a monks' encyclopaedia dated 1168. It also contains two pages from Chaucer's The Book of Fame printed in London in 1483, a signed note by Jonathan Swift and a collection of religious silverware.
