Lough Muckno's island-studded waters are surrounded by a forest park recently laid out with nature trails. The park used to belong to Blaney Castle, better known as Hope Castle after it was bought in the 19C by London banker Thomas Hope. The first castle, around which the city was developed, was built by Edward Blaney, governor of Monaghan, by order of James I.
