In 1953, painter Derek Hill, who worked for a while as a theatrical set painter in Munich, bought an old presbytery (1828) near the lake. In 1982, a gallery was built in its pleasant gardens to house his collection of contemporary paintings, made up of works by renowned Irish painters or inhabitants of the Isle of Tory, who had a primitive style of painting and produced some extraordinary canvasses in the «popular» style.
