This village grew up in the shadow of Muckish Hill (670 m), whose shape provided inspiration for St Michael's Church, designed in 1971 by Liam McCormack and Partners. Artists and writers such as William Butler Yeats, George Russell, Percy French and Gilbert Chesterton, were frequent visitors here.

Easily recognisable by its flat top and the large cairn on its summit, Muckish is an impressively rugged mountain. You can climb it by Muckish Gap, a stark and narrow pass.
