Castlecaufield : Michelin's recommendations
At the south-eastern end of the village stand the large ruins of a manor built between 1611 and 1619 by an ancestor of the counts of Charlemont, Sir Toby Caulfield, who commanded Charlemont Fort. His coat of arms is still visible on the guardroom, an old defence with loopholes above the main gate. The building was set alight by the O'Donnells in 1641, but the Caulfields occupied it for a further 20 years.
