Drumcliff : Michelin's recommendations
In the churchyard at Drumcliff, where his great grandfather had once been rector, lies the grave of William Butler Yeats (left). This site at the foot of the square escarpment of Benbulben (526m), by the Drumcliff River, was also chosen by Saint Columba for the foundation of a monastery in about 575. The round tower was damaged by lightning in 1396. The east and west faces of the cross, erected c 1000, bear some remarkable sculptures.
