A large enclosed harbour south of the Liffey, the Grand Canal Dock (1796) was for many years the largest in the world. Gradually abandoned after the arrival of the railway, it has been spectacularly rehabilitated. Overlooking the docklands, the Millennium Tower and Alto Vetro emerge like unexpected skyscrapers; the Grand Canal Square development includes a theatre, whose design calls to mind a sharply pointed diamond. The complex, when lit up at night, is quite spectacular.
