King John's Castle, built by Jack Lackland in 1185 soon after the Norman invasion, has a vast circular dungeon surrounded by fortified walls. It was altered constantly over subsequent centuries. The public library houses the nautical museum. Local shipwrecks are well documented, particularly the sinking of the Moresby in the bay on December 24th, 1895, causing 20 deaths.
