The heart of the modern city, between the old town and the port, centres on the small John Kennedy Park, named after the President of the United States who visited in 1963. Several monuments are to be seen here, such as Browne doorway, cannons from the Crimean War, statues of Patrick O'Connor and Liam Mellows, who took part in the Easter Rising. The local council's sword and mace, instituted in 1484 by Richard III and abolished in 1841, are exhibited at the Bank of Ireland building.
