The name is a reminder of the city's trading links with Spain. The Spanish Arch seems to have been part of a bastion made of four blind arches, one of which was opened in the 18C to give access to a new dock beside Eyre's Long Walk. A small part of the medieval town wall can still be seen on the south side of the arch, as well as the tidal quays which date from 1270. The City Museum is located nearby.
