Castle : Michelin's recommendations
This castle was built by William de Clare, Earl Marshal between 1192 and 1207. It is located on the most imposing bank of the Nore. The castle was then acquired by the Butler Family, earls and later dukes of Ormond, who lived here from the late 14C until 1935. Despite its complete modernisation during the 19C, it was in a pitiful state when handed over to the city in 1967. From the vestibule, tiled with Kilkenny marble and decorated with paintings, visitors go up the mahogany stairs, installed in 1838, to the library and from there on to the living room. These rooms have been restored into their Victorian appearance together with part of the original furniture. The dining room is furnished in 18C style. The main gallery, decorated with 17C, 18C and 19C paintings and four tapestries (1660) designed by Rubens, was created in the 19C by John Pollen, who installed two Carrare marble chimneys, a Norwegian wood ceiling decorated in pre-Raphaelite style with Celtic patterns. In the bedrooms, visitors can admire the hand painted Chinese silk wallpaper and a mahogany bed with a horse hair mattress. During the 19C, the 93 servants walked between the castle and the outbuildings through an underground passage beneath the road. Numerous footpaths cross the extensive grounds.
