The second largest town in the county, Kilrush, located on the north bank of the Shannon Estuary, is also the main trading centre of southwest County Clare. Lively horse fairs are held in the main square. In the 19C, the region was a holiday destination for the inhabitants of Limerick. In summer, families of bottle-nosed dolphins can be seen frolicking in the estuary.
