English lacemakers introduced this traditional craft around 1820. At its peak in the 19C, the local factory employed around 900 young girls. Celtic motifs were picked out in a fine or thicker thread - depending on the design - on a machine-woven cotton weft, then filled in with decorative stitching. The technique is still in use at the Convent of the Good Shepherd.
