Reached along the R 335 heading west from Wesport; after climbing Ireland’s sacred mountain, Croagh Patrick, continue to Roonagh Quay from where ferries cross to Clare Island. Surrounded by 90m-high cliffs, this rock-like island commands access to Clew bay. On the return journey, stop at the old Bunlahinch Clapper Bridge, its 37 slab supports resting on stone piers, before continuing down to Doo Lough, flanked to the west by the Mweelrea mountains and to the east by the Sheeffry hills.
