The weekly market takes place in a square, the Octagon, around a Doric column which used to be crowned by a statue of George Glendinning, a local banker and philanthropist. From the square the main street descends to the Mall, a magnificent promenade lined with lime trees along the River Carrowbeg, spanned by a narrow hump-backed bridge.
