Historic Gaol : Michelin's recommendations

This formidable stone prison, built in 1702, the time of the Penal Laws, was in use until 1924. A sophisticated exhibition now presents some of the most dramatic episodes from Irish history. Visitors are given a taste of 18C prison life, under the watchful eye of a prison warder, while English soldiers from 1798 ponder how to crush the rebellion (many insurgents were tried in this building).
