The road along the Antrim coast takes in some varied landscape. On the sea side are charming villages, vast expanses of shore, high basalt and limestone cliffs, with Scotland’s Mull of Kintyre in the distance. Inland lie the glens, narrow little valleys hewn by rivers running down from the boggy moorland, punctuated by forestry plantations. In these valleys where the sedimentary layers break the surface are farms rising in stages up the slopes.
