Barryscourt Castle : Michelin's recommendations

The ruins of this castle are located in a strategic position, on the main road between Cork and Waterford. The keep, built in 1420, is surrounded by a wall, which incorporates the ruined walls of a 13C Great Hall. It was fortified with two towers after being attacked by Walter Raleigh in 1580 . The castle is named after Philipp of Barri, from Manorbier in Wales, who was given the land around 1180 by his uncle, Robert Fitzstephen, one of the first Norman adventurers to settle in Ireland.
