The extremely beautiful ruins of the abbey founded in 1170 stand near Clonmines, an abandoned medieval market town, together with the remains of fortified houses, a fortified church and an Augustine monastery. This roofless but well-preserved cross-shaped abbey-church, borders a cove of the Barrow. It has a low crenelated tower as well as six chapels in the transept, illuminated by small, plain windows. Very few vestiges remain of the adjoining buildings.
