The importance of this castle according to records was inherent in its site, an impressive headland, separated from the shore by two gorges, rather than the few remaining vestiges. Dunseverick, which means "Royal Fortress of Sobhairce", stood on the road to Tara leading through the Moyry Gap. St Patrick visited the site in the 5C.
