Healy Pass (330m) is named after Tim Healy, a Nationalist MP at Westminster from 1880 to 1916 and the first Governor-General of the Irish Free State in 1922. As a retirement present, he requested that improvements be made to what until then had been a mere bridleway over the mountains between Adrigole and Lauragh. Opened in 1931, the road climbs for 11km through a series of hairpin bends to the summit; on a clear day the views of both shores of Beara peninsula are very impressive.
