Hervey of Montmorency, Strongbow's uncle, settled down in Great Island, an island formed by the Barrow delta whose Eastern inlet was filled-in in the 19C. A rectangular-shaped earth structure probably corresponds to the outline of its fortress. Another enclosure (8 ha), around earthen ramparts, marks the place where one of the first Christian monastic foundations once stood. Today, an elegant Georgian house stands here.
