At the end of the 12C, an Augustine priory that prospered until the mid-16C replaced a pre-Roman monastery dedicated to St Nechtan. Its ruins stand on a natural defence that overlooks the Roe. The church is a fine example of medieval architecture: the two full arches in the romanesque style in the eastern wall are probably the work of the Augustines, who added the choir in the 13C.
