The Bishop’s Road was cut through Binevenagh mountain to ease the journey between Limavady and home for the eccentric Bishop of Derry Frederick Hervey (1730-1803), a passionate traveller and collector of art and antiquities. The steep road climbs the northeast slope of the hill. A superb view takes in Magilligan beach extending towards the Inishowen peninsula. In the 19C, this beach was the starting point for the Irish Geographical Survey.
